Aley’s Dr. Abdul Mun’im Talhouk, (1913 – 2004) was the first entomologist in Lebanon to take an intimate interest in the life of insects, his research became an essential reference in America, Europe and the Middle East.

Born in the village of Aley, Aref el Rayess (1928 – 2005) was an internationally recognised, prolific and diverse artist, painter and sculptor – known and loved as much for his colorful and candid language as for his works of art.

Dr. Jamil Talhouk (1884-1957) is still rightly remembered as one of Aley’s (and Lebanon’s) greatest statesmen. From mayor to MP to medical practitioner, his selfless contribution to his country and his city left an indelible mark.

Born in the village of Btalloun, Khalil Saleeby (1870–1928), is considered the founder of modern Lebanese art. An artistic rebel and revolutionary, achieving international fame, his life was tragically cut short.

Mohammed Al Aridi (1911-1991) was born in the village of Baissour. He was considered a brilliant journalist, linguist, writer and poet. His books included “The Dictionary of Hidden Secrets”.

Naim Mrad (1910-2008) is a name synonymous with the development of Aley during his tenure as mayor. He was awarded Knight National Order of the Cedar for his services to the community.

Born in Aley, Said Saab (1928-2003) was a journalist and editor, considered one of the most masterful penmen of his era. He was awarded Knight, National Order of the Cedar for his services to the media.

Sami Makarem (1931–2012) was born in the village of Aytat. He is one of Lebanon’s most highly regarded scholars, authors, artists. He was the son of Sheikh Nassib Makarem (1889 – 1971), the famous calligraphic artist. His legacy continues today in the Sami Makarem Cultural Center in Aytat.

Shakib Jaber (1932-1965) was a highly regarded lawyer and activist, born in Aley. His statue stands on the Damascus Highway, at the entrance to Aley, a tribute and reminder of the high esteem in which he was held within Lebanon and internationally.

The Talhouk family dates its origins among the earliest recorded settlers in Lebanon, and the district of Aley. The family played an important role in the development of the Mount Lebanon region.
